On the way to Winterail in Stockton, Richard Elgenson, a fellow writer for Trainweb.com, and I decided to go via Tehachapi since Richard had never gone there. We spent the night before at the Motel 6 in Mojave and drove west on California Highway 58 the next morning.
3/13/2004The recently-installed National Historic Civil Engineering landmark plaque and California Historical Landmark plaque at the overlook to the Tehachapi Loop.
We drove to Sand Canyon Road where we exited for this eastbound BNSF freight curving out of Monolith.
BNSF 5488 East highballing through Tehachapi with a Kansas City Southern locomotive trailing.
BNSF 4997 West at the east switch of Walong.
Union Pacific 3878 East approaching the loop.
The same train on top of the loop.
BNSF 5424 West came into Walong and met Union Pacific 4019 on the loop.
Union Pacific 4019 climbed the loop with a SOO Line helper on the rear.
BNSF 4005 East ascended the loop.
From there we went to Bealvile.

Union Pacific 5817 East approaching Tunnel 2.
BNSF 1061 East at Tunnel 2 and onto Bealville. This completed our visit to Tehachapi for this trip.
