These are my four Scale Trains carbon black covered hoppers.
Scale trains offered this very unique car a few years ago.
They are incredibly detailed and usually can be found for about
$40-50 each. Carbon black is a sooty substance used in the
tire making process. These cars were common at the Kelly
Springfield Tire plant in Cumberland, MD, so were needed to model
that industry. Each came decorated as you see here. I
weathered them with an airbrush and very think coats of paint to
subdue the bright white paint on the cars. Other than that,
they are ready to earn their keep.
These are six McKean carbon black covered hoppers that I custom
decaled and weathered. These ACF type cars are older than
the boxier Thrall ones above. It appears the original name
of Columbia Chermicals Co. was Columbia Carbon Co. I
modified each to have 11 hatches on top to match the real
cars. These are Black Swamp Decals, which are hard to find.
