Brunswick,
Maryland... Brunswick is the eastern most yard on my
layout. The East End of the Cumberland Subdivision
technically ends at Weverton, just west of Brunswick.
However, this yard is extremely important operationally, and had
to be modeled. Brunswick was an extremely important point
on the B&O during the steam era, as it was the first major
yard west of Baltimore. However, during the Chessie Era it
wasn't quite as important. Most of the work had moved
further west to Cumberland. Brunswick did however maintain
a roundhouse, turntable, two passenger stations and an
interlocking tower. A small stock yard was also there
during the late B&O era, but I am uncertain if it was still
there during the Chessie Era. Brunswick was also the last
wood shop on the B&O, so the old wooden cabooses went there
for heavy maintenance. The large classification
yard on the west side of the yard was really only used for
storage of excess east bound coal trains during the Chessie
Era. The final operational interesting item in Brunswick
was the Maryland Area Rapid Commuter (MARC) trains. Their
service facilities were in Brunswick and the trains were kept
there when not in use.
Just east of Brunswick is the classic passenger station at Point
of Rocks, MD. The main lines split here, with lines
heading to north Philadelphia and east to Washington, DC.
I use this split to start my loop shaped staging yard.
This feature allows trains to leave Brunswick in both
directions, like the real yard. Trains heading east though
only travel a few feet into staging. This also allows for
traffic to enter Brunswick from the east, adding interest to the
yard operations.
Below is a map of the Brunswick Yard. The yard is five
miles long, so it is seen here on three images.
Below is my graph paper plan
for Brunswick Yard. I don't have room for everything
in my representation of Brunswick. I chose the
elements that were needed most. Since trains were
broken up heading west, but rarely heading east, I kept a
scalled down Valley Yard, but eliminated the Eastbound
Receiving and Classification Yards. I kept the
roundhouse, scaled down with less stalls. I also made
sure to include the station, which I have a kit of, and WB
interlocking tower, which I have already built.
Below is the current Brunswick area. ((I have not started
this section yet, so photos will be posted later))
