Berkeley Springs, WV was originally a resort town
that included such guests as George Washington. Apparently
the springs there were quite relaxing. During the Chessie
Era, Berkeley Springs was a five mile long track off the Hancock
Yard. The vast majority of the traffic off this line
generated from the Pennsylvania Glass and Sand (US Silica)
Plant. It is still active today. During the Chessie
Era, there were tracks beyond the sand plant to serve a Westvaco
Pulpwood Yard (two tracks near Williams Street) and three small
industries (Wayne Feed, Newbraugh's Supply and Cold
Storage). There was a very quaint passenger station here
as well on the corner of Route 522 and Williams St. It
still stands today, but is no longer serving the railroad.
It appears it was closed to passengers during the Chessie Era as
well.
Below is the map of Berkeley Springs.
Most of the action was at the sand plant. Dozens of
small covered hoppers were used to keep it satisfied.
Below is my graph paper plan for Berkeley
Springs. This is the part of Berkeley Springs including
the US Silica plant.
Below is the current status of Berkeley Springs ((I haven't
started yet, so I'll post photos later)).
