Passenger Station Baggage Storage Shed, Martinsburg,
WV
This baggage storage shed is no longer standing in Martinsburg,
but it used to be attached to the passenger station. It was
removed some time after the Chessie Era. It was in use in
the Chessie era, but it was not well cared for. I scratch
built the structure from Northeastern Scale Lumber and a styrene
roof. The model was painted with an air brush with a custom
mixed off white color. I weathered the wood with a
rounded blade to scrape away the paint and an India ink
wash. Weathering is heavier than normal, due to the sad
state of the real structure. The roof is tissue paper
attached with black paint, to simulate tar paper. I created
a plastic foundation for it to sit on, so it sits level with the
platform. I also selectively compressed the shed. The
real shed had four large sliding doors. I had room for only
two.
Below is a shot of the real baggage storage shed in 1970.
Note that three of the four large doors are visible, one is off
frame to the right. There is a baggage cart on the left of
the frame, used to load luggage and cargo on passenger trains.
