1500. Station Agents report to and receive instructions from the Superintendent, and will obey the instructions of the Trainmaster and Chief Train Dispatcher. They will comply with instructions issued by the heads of other departments.
1501. They will have charge of the business of the company at the station, including all property connected therewith, and all persons employed thereat; will see that all employes perform their duties properly and promptly and preserve order about the sation and grounds.
1502. They will see that their offices, waiting rooms, freight houses, other station buildings, platforms and grounds are kept in a clean and orderly condition and clear of obstructions over which people may stumble; that all grass, straw or other flammable material is promptly removed from the depot grounds and premises; that stock pens are kept in good order and ready for use; and that street crossings and sidewalks are not obstructed.
1503. Baggage, trucks, and other articles will not be allowed to stand on the depot platforms where they may cause accident, or inconvenience to passengers or to employes, or receive damage from the weather. Trucks will be locked or chained to prevent being moved or blown onto the tracks.
1504. They will report promptly to the Superintendent needed repairs at their stations, all cases of attempted robbery, theft of property belonging to or in charge of the Company, damage to property by fire or storm, and personal injury.
1505. They will not permit any boards, posters or advertising matter to be placed on cars, except such cards as are furnished by the Company, nor the posting of advertising matter in or about stations or other structures located on the Company's property, without proper authority.
1506. They will promptly advise the Superintendent of any unusual event of general interest or importance which occurs in the vicinity of their station, such as fires, disasters, death of prominent persons, etc.
1507. They will be accomodating to the public, promote the best interests of the Company, and notify proper officers of anything affecting their departments.
1508. They must be familiar with and comply with the instructions governing the transportation of pivoting and swinging machinery and cars of excessive load and clearance limitations. Agents receiving such shipments for movement will make immediate report by wire or telephone to the Superintendent and General Superintendent of Transportation.
1509. They will open the ticket offices sufficiently in advance or arrival of passenger trains to permit the purchase of tickets and take all practicable steps to see that passengers have tickets before boarding trains.
1510. They will not sell tickets for stations at which trains do not stop, for trains that do not carry passengers, to persons not in condition to care for themselves unless accompanied by a proper person, nor for excursions or extra trains unless so authorized.
1511. Whenever the passenger service is disarranged, those interested must be informed of the probable length of time of the interruption. Announcements should be made in waiting rooms and on platforms, and to passengers when purchasing tickets.
1512. Train bulletin boards must be kept properly dated and and posted with current information concerning expected arrival and departure of trains.
1513. They will see that United States mail pouches are not left unprotected upon the platforms or in the waiting rooms and other exposed places at stations.
1514. They will notify postmaster of all timetable changes, will see that those handling mail comply with postal regulations and will not hang mail pouches on mail cranes more than ten minutes before the arrival of the train for which they are intended.
1515. They will make every effort to obtain suitable cars for shippers at the time desired, but must not promise to furnish them within a specified time, unless so advised.
1516. Cars furnished for loading must be inspected by Agent, when practicable, to assure that they are in condition for the freight to be loaded and when cars received are unfit for the purpose required, report must be made to proper authority.
1517. When demand for cars exceeds supply and available cars are distributed by Agent, it must be done in proportion to requirements of shippers, their ability to load, and with due regard to sequence of their orders.
1518. They are responsible for seeing that cars, loaded with commodities requiring inspection before being moved, are inspected by proper forces and are approved before permitting movement.
1519. They will, as far as practicable, see that all nails, cleats, blocking, wires, etc., used in loading cars, and refuse is removed when cars are made empty, obtaining the cooperation of shippers and consignees to this end.
1520. In loading flammable commodities they will be particular to select tight cars and to see that all openings are closed and securely fastened.
1521. They will use every effort to secure the prompt dispatch of cars and have waybills ready promptly, so that trains will not be delayed, and see that cars are forwarded at the earliest practicable time.
1522. Whenever company material in carloads is received at any station under their jurisdiction, for which there is no disposition, they will at once report to the Superintendent, giving contents and other pertinent information, so that it may be arranged to have the cars unloaded promptly.
1523. They will show on title page of freight and passenger tariffs, and supplements thereto, the date received, and file tariffs and supplements on or before effective date, in proper location in the tariff file. Notices to the public will be posted on bulletin boards or in cases provided therefor and circulars received from various departments will be filed together according to the issuing department.
