B&O/C&O Operating Rules 1969 - Use of Spring Switches
Use of Spring Switches

    702. Where the letter "S" or "SS" is attached to the switch stand of a hand-operated switch, it denotes "Spring Switch". The normal position and speed over switches will be designated by special instructions. Trains which may stop on a spring switch, after starting a trailing movement through the switch, must not take slack or reverse movement without first reversing hand-throw switch lever.

    702-A. Where the movement through or over a spring switch is governed by signal indication and STOP or STOP AND PROCEED is displayed, trains or engines after complying with rule 509 will be governed as follows:

    Facing movement must not be made over spring switch until it has been carefully examined to insure that it is lined and facing properly;

    Trailing movement through a spring switch to enter or foul a mian track or other signalled track must not be made until spring switch has been hand-operated to proper position and a waiting time of 5 minutes has elapsed to secure benefit of signal protection;

    Indication to proceed when switch has been hand-operated will not relieve crew of waiting for signal protection. The spring switch must not be restored to normal position until the movement has been completed. Unless proper arrangements are made otherwise, the same employe who operates the switch must restore it to normal position.

    702-B. Spring switches must not be spiked or blocked until arangements have been made to provide proper signal protection for trailing movements.

    Where provided at spring switch locations, crews will operate push buttons in accordance with special instructions.
