SPEED LIMIT SIGNS

   725.

yellow circular sign w/ speed limits
NAME-REDUCE SPEED
INDICATION-REDUCE TO SPEED INDICATED BY SIGN

The Reduce Speed Sign is circular, 24 inches in diameter, with speed limit shown in black figures on a yellow background.

When two speed limits are shown on sign, the higher limit is for passenger trains and the lower limit for freight trains.

These signs will be located alongside the track on the Engineer's side and govern the movement of trains into territory of reduced speed. They will be placed far enough in advance of the point at which the reduced speed becomes effective to permit reduction from maximum authorized speed to the reduced speed as specified on the sign and will apply to trains moving into the reduced speed territory on any track.

Trains exceeding the speed specified by the sign must reduce speed immediately when passing sign.

The Resume Speed Sign is circular, 24 inches in diameter, with plain green background. These signs will be located alongside the track on the Engineer's side and govern the movement of trains out of territory of reduced speed. They are located at the departing end of reduced speed territory. Engineer must not exceed the speed specified by Reduce Speed Sign until the rear end of the train has passed the Resume Speed Sign.

   727. Temporary Reduce, Slow and Resume Speed Signs.-These signs are 18 inches square with the upper corners cut off. They will be placed on the Engineer's side of the track. In territory authorized by special instructions, speed restrictions may be governed by bulletin and figures designating speed may be displayed on Temporary Reduce Speed Sign. In other territories, train order will be used and no figures will be displayed.

Trains or engines will be governed by speed specified by train order (or by figures displayed on Temporary Reduce Speed Sign), except in the absence of train order or figures displayed on sign, trains and engines will not exceed 10 miles per hour over track section between Temporary Reduce and Resume Speed Signs.
