Chris Guenzler Millionth Mile Lookout Point

La Plata, Missouri

A Photo Essay by Carl Morrison, Carl@TrainWeb.com

October 15 - 21, 2011

The Chris Guenzler Millionth Mile Lookout Point is an enclosed and heated structure near the Depot Inn & Suites in Silver Rails Country, featuring large windows and seating for year round viewing of trains along the BNSF mainline. Free WiFi and electric outlets are also available.

Also available inside the structure is an ATCS Monitor - Advanced Train Control Systems Monitor - which indicates the direction an distance to the next approaching train on the double-track mainline below the lookout.

Today, the overpass is gone, but the enclosed Lookout and deck have been placed on the old right-of-way overlooking the BNSF tracks.
Brown St. and Hwy. 63 bridges still remain in tact.

As on this day, people drive to the Lookout for an excellent vantage point to watch trains.
The Depot Inn & Suites has a 4-passenger golf cart guests can use to go down the old right-of-way to the nearby lookout.

From the deck, you can see all the way to the Depot and beyond, looking westward.

Looking eastward, visitors can see trains curve under Brown Street and pass below the lookout.

Occasionally, you can see Amish crossing the Brown St. Bridge.  My 'Bucket Shot' would be a train passing underneath an Amish buggy.

You meet the nicest people at the Lookout.  On this day "Kansas City Nathan", Host of Let's Talk Trains, was there celebrating his own birthday.

Chris Rhea, right, takes videos from the Lookout.  He visits other trainwatching spots around NEMO from his home in Macon, MO.  He has many videos on YouTube.com

BNSF equipment passes right below the Lookout.

You can take a leisurely walk, or a ride in the Inn's golf cart, back to the Depot Inn & Suites.
