Train Chasing on Saturday

Ray Ivy, La Plata City Manager, drove the van for those who wanted to chase BNSF trains southwest of La Plata.  We headed west out of town on Hwy. 156 to Hwy. 3, then south to the overpass, near the former towns of La Cross and Cardy, Mo.  Finding no action there, Dave Mangold had heard on his scanner comment about a coal train, so we headed to the small town of Elmer, to see if we could find it underway.  This was a good move.  We got lots of action here with freights and even the eastbound Southwest Chief.

Around a pile of replaced cross ties came a sight from the past, three teenage Amish boys aboard two mules and a pony (below).  Larry explained that Amish did not use mules, so they must be breaking them to ride for an English person.  "Getting paid to ride horses," Larry smiled.

Even though the concert wasn't for another 4 hours, folks had placed their chairs to reserve a seat in all available spots.

The PTHS Group had a chance for a closer look at the Bevier & Southern's #112 in town before the 5 pm dinner at the Pear Tree.

Bill explained that it had a 10 horsepower engine, 44 cubic inch displacement.  It gets 33 mpg.
Jim closed the vent (below left side of car) before loading it on his flatbed and said, "That's my air conditioning."  I asked if the propeller on the grill was stock and he said, "Yes, on the '51 and '52 models only."

The appointed time for the group dinner at the Pear Tree in Bevier, MO, was 5 p.m.   Guest began to arrive at the popular restaurant and we were ushered to the banquet room where 22 places had been set for the group.  The restaurant was full, as expected on this Homecoming Weekend.  Steve and Barbara had ordered wine and hors d'oeuvres and our group quickly took our places.

After a delicious dinner at the Pear Tree, some attendees walked uptown to the Hwy. 101 Band concert, others headed back home.  Ray still had the van we used to chase trains in the afternoon, so I rode back to the Depot Inn & Suites in the van.  Ray and I talked about his recent trip to Haiti with a group from his church.
