Canterbury Railway Society Inc News Steam & Diesel Restoration Progress 3/3/2001 Work continues at a slower pace on D 140. The new water tanks are structurally almost complete. Slide bars on the motion have been measured for correction. The boiler is to have about 2 dozen stays replaced and new tubes fitted. The airbrake system has been overhauled, brake cylinders, reservoirs and sandboxes are being fitted. Additional grant funds have been received for the work on F 13. The loco was stripped down for its decadal survey almost 12 months ago, having been largely idle for several years. Routine work is required on the boiler, and the suspension will be overhauled, among other tasks. RM 56 which was unfortunately targeted by the graffiti artists again recently is having the roof stripped and primed. Costings are being obtained for the body which is in any case due for a regular repainting. Engine parts for RM 51 are expected to cost around $2000 and this is currently being considered by the Society Executive. TR 22 which was recently painted externally in red, has had the cab interior painted a delicate shade of turquoise. TR 156 is having some attention to oil leaks and rust is being cut out of the bodywork. |
