Electric Railway Overhead Extension Tested

28/8/00

Saturday 5th August saw the culmination of months of hard work by the Ferrymead Railway's Electric Traction Section when the first stage of the overhead extension was completed and tested. Electric locomotives are now able, for the first time, to enter onto the main line at Moorhouse and travel nearly all the way to the Moorhouse outer home signal. The work has included installing poles, stringing new catenary and contact wire, and welding bond cables onto all rail joints. Railway members and people from other societies watched as, at around 4 pm, EC 7 left the electric locomotive shed and headed towards Ferrymead, passing over Clem's Crossing and continuing a short distance further. The overhead will eventually be extended all the way to Ferrymead and into Moorhouse yard.
