Locomotive & Rolling Stock Restoration - April 2002
20/4/2002
- The Society has been granted the use of W 192 for a further month following the Easter festival weekend. This will enable us to operate the W for a special tour party on April 27th. It was originally expected that W 192 would return to its home base immediately after Easter.
- Members have carried out repairs to W 192's drop grate which burnt out after a recent running day.
- Work on the boiler of D 140 by a local engineering firm has been held up while our members fit the dry pipe in the boiler, longitudinal stays and the remaining firebox stays. Once this work is complete the company will tube the boiler. Our workers then will fit the new smokebox and ashpan. The tanks are now largely complete except for fitting the balance pipe.
- F 13's boiler has been returned to Ferrymead from Lyttelton Engineering without any work done, as it was discovered the inner firebox was wasted away and the locomotive would require a new firebox. Replacement of the firebox is subject to obtaining additional funding.
- D 26 is now nearly complete externally except for the end platforms and underframe. The axles and bearings are receiving attention and the platform handrails etc are not yet completed. Internally, the window shutters have been fitted and vents are to be installed above the windows. The next major task will be the fitting of seating. When completed D 26 will be a fairly unusual exhibit as very few examples of this type of small four wheel carriage are in existence in NZ.
