Benchwork: Table Top, Open Grid & Modular

Benchwork

The simplest type of support (called "benchwork") for a model railroad is a simple table.  Often used is a 4x8 sheet of plywood, but be sure to add extra stiffening.  While simple a table top offers little flexibility in terms of different levels of terrain.

More flexible is the open grid of vertically oriented structural members typically 1x4s.  A particularly useful for is the so-called L-girder.

Finally there have recently been developed several sets of physical and electrical interface standards for modular sections that can be combined to form different layouts.  (See TrainPlayer FreeMo layouts.)
