Meeting Minutes
BSG president Roy Meissner opened the January BSG general meeting. First of all he introduced two of our newest members Mike Coggins and Larry Pries.
Roy asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes of the last meeting which were printed in the newsletter. The minutes were accepted as printed.
Jeff Young then gave the Treasurer's report. Jeff gave a total report for the year, and the swap meets were down just a little from last year. A few members brought up a budget matters for 2012, many members said we should be more prudent with our funds for 2012..
We will be going to the fifth Sunday of the month for our swap meets 2112-2013. This was done not to compete with other train events or shows
Any members that have any other ideas along with the swap meets that generate a profit for the club should let the board know their ideas.
Steve Lunde presented the 2012 S Fest car, The cars will be available with separate numbers at a member cost of $65.00 each. This special pre sale will be only sold till 4-30-2012. See further note below about this sales. Steve's address and phone number are listed later in the newsletter.
Our web mister Doug and Gayla Stoll should be notified to update the web site to reflect the 2012 S Fest and sale of the S Fest car.. I'll send Doug an e-mail
The S Fest committee meeting is 2-8-12 6:30 @ Jeff Maddens house. Call Steve Lunde for any other details
S Fest is November 2, 3, 4 2012 @ Marriott hotel Waukesha.
The "almighty club pass" was talked about again. We have members that get one and don't show up or spend little time at the layout. The President presented a signup sheet for members to devote a least 3-4 hours on the club layout. This could be a morning shift an afternoon shift, or anything in between. The afternoon shift will help with tear down so don't escape. Please, we need your help!!
Did you know we have nice white light weight tables for
events? Jeff Young has them in storage in his garage. If you need them for club
events contact Mr. Young. This was talked about because the Green bay event in
April charges for tables. We could save a possible $50.00.
Upcoming Mad city event was talked
about. If you can help set up is Friday in
Madison Friday the 17th. Loading is at Dick Kloes house is 9:30 on that Friday.
Cedarburg train show was talked about and we will have our layout at the event.
.The President discussed the ownership of the club layout.
Most members feel the club should own all sections.
Work scheduling could begin those sections after Mad City.
The meeting was adjourned

Thanks to Ron Schlicht for hosting the last meeting at Greenfield News and Hobby.
It was nice to see so many members at the meeting. Keep it up!!! Remember, don't forget about paying your dues
Nice article by Ron S. about our dearly departed train brother Arthur Doty. I will miss him. I guess the report on new products and other events might have to fall on my shoulders until we can find a replacement.
The club has many events coming up the next few months if you donate some time take a look at the schedule and hope to see many members at the shows
Thanks for all your support and hope to see you at our events in the future.
Las Vegas has 5/1 that Ron Farve/Schlicht comes back after boredom sets in

Memorial by Ron Schlicht
Arthur Doty (July 1933 - Jan. 2012)
The "Ubiquitous' as he called himself, Art Doty passed away Monday January 23, 2012. The Thesaurus on my software can substitute the words ever-present or everywhere for ubiquitous. Art tried like crazy to be ever-present everywhere. If you ever met Art, it's certain that you would have never forgotten him. That long bearded, happy go lucky train lover was always seen with one of his memorable caps. Some of them were a little goofy, some were right on, but they were always entertaining and were purely Art Doty. Even though we are in the 21st century, 20th century would be the best description of Art. He loved trains, S gauge, farm implements (hardly ever missed a threshers show), pictures from yesteryear and could have been a relative of A.C. Gilbert. It wasn't that Art clung to the past; he just enjoyed the history of it. He was quite knowledgeable on a broad range of topics.
He was a man who was always on the go. He joined the Badgerland S Gaugers back in May of 1977. Art was not exclusive to BSG. He was a member of numerous other organizations: the Marking Device Assoc., Chicago Area S. Gaugers, Stateline S. Gaugers, Postcard Collectors Club. Lakes Region Historical Soc., Lake Co. Historical Soc., Kenosha Co. Historical Soc., Fox Lake Area Historical Soc., A.C. Gilbert Society, Fan Collectors Club, Toy Train Operators Society, S.E. WI Antique Power Collectables Society, Descendants of the Mayflower Society, and the Edward Doten Society. Art was very active with Boy Scout Troop 92 and was an over 50 year member of the PM&L Theatre. Even those closest to Art, know that there are probably more than that, but just can't remember them all. It explains why every time BSG scheduled a general meeting Art would be checking his calendar. Those of you who knew him can remember that he would tell us what other meets or meetings that he had to attend that particular day. Without exaggerating Art was known to attend two, three or even more meets in one day. They might be in Wisconsin, Illinois Indiana or Iowa. Come to think of it, I believe he might have been a member of the Hawkeye S Gaugers at one time. From model train swap meets to tractor pulls, postcard shows to toy fairs, there was no way that it was humanly possible to keep up with Art's activities. With the possibility of Alaska and Hawaii, I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me that he was in every state of the union at one time or another. Alaska and Hawaii, I don't know?
But Art was not only a joiner of clubs, Art an active participant. If help was needed for an S Fest or other club activities, you could count on him to be there and lend a hand. As one BSG member put it; He was one of the people in this hobby who was involved for the enjoyment of the fellowship with people of similar interest, as well as the enjoyment of the hobby itself.
Art is probably up there now with A.C. Gilbert talking about all of the Gilbert products that were manufactured. Perhaps he is offering suggestions as to what A.C. missed. For sure he is offering his opinion on what could have been improved on those All Aboard panels.
Art enjoyed life and those who were lucky to have known him, enjoyed Art. His personality, wit and knowledge will be missed by those he came in contact with.
slightly off track
by ron schlicht
No I am not back as the editor of this publication. Here and there as the spirit moves me, I may write an article or so to help the new editor fill a page or so. I felt that the best title for the articles should be "Slightly Off Track" since that's where I have been most of my life. This will also give a warning, to those who wish, just what part of the newsletter to skip.
Mad-City Model Railroad Show and Sale, that's a mouthful. I often wondered why they had to add the words "and sale" to the Mad-City Model Railroad Show. Perhaps they felt that people might not think that there was anything to buy at a model railroad show. There is the term "show and tell" but this is America, if the word show is in a title, you can bet your last dollar that it is a show and "sell". I almost forgot, perhaps the intent of the word sale is to draw more individuals of the female persuasion. It doesn't take a lot to persuade some. Just mention the word sale and my wife would go to a junk yard.
I think the term Mad-City is appropriate for Madison; it seems like everybody there is angry now. Well a model railroad show is just the event to take the edge off. Then of course in the city of the perpetually offended, we were once asked to turn the smoke off in our engines because some individuals were bothered by it. Right after that they probably dragged their attitude outside and lit up a cigarette.
Some model railroaders have made small prototype building with lantern hanging posts in front of structures. This practice of hanging your railroad lantern outside actually started the term red light districts. Thank God that most people would need an explanation. Otherwise even more would find something to be offended by. Yes there are dirty old men among us in model railroading, too bad, so sad.
It is nice that Madison and Milwaukee are far enough apart so that the crowds are different. I like to meet new model railroad enthusiasts. Then there will always be your train show junkies who just can't get enough. I have seen the same people attend show, after show, after show, after show (I do four consecutive weeks sometimes). They seem to stand mesmerized in front of my layout without saying more than a word. Truthfully some of them are downright scary. But I suppose it's better entertainment than a strip club or porn show. Then again how would I know? However there is something mystifying about electric trains. I think for some it takes them back to their childhood. In my case, my wife, among others, feels I never got out of mine.
There are different facilities in the Milwaukee area, that
when they have train displays, the attendance and income are at their highest
levels for that time of
year. Unfortunately this means that one of the only railroads that make money
isn't government subsidized. Model railroads haven't gotten any federal funding
or bailouts. Come to think of it, all of us that actually display at the shows,
it costs us money to do so. At Madison you have the very early morning game
show, hosted by security, called "Beat the Guard or Pay for Parking".
For those who may be offended again, that only means that you have to get there
earlier than the guards, not to actually physically accost them. Then again the
way some people drive into the lot I'm surprised that they don't run over the
ticket booth, especially those who are texting.
S Gauge is usually well represented at the Madison show both in displays and sales tables. Since this show is in the middle of February, we all hope that Mother Nature will be kind. There have been those trips home where you don't necessarily follow the car in front of you. He may not be able to see where the heck he is driving either. Another thing that I love about the ever tolerant and loving city of Madison, my van has been damaged twice while attending this show. The first time my $500.00 deductible paid for 25% of the damage. The second time I was not going to have the bumper replaced and pay the $500.00 again. Other than that, this is a great model railroad show.
In the event that I offended someone other than myself and
Madisonians, that's life. Then again I hope my wife doesn't read this article.
Until the next time, whenever that is, See Ya.
