Bricklayers Arms: Entrance via the long slope

The Long Slope

From New Cross the South Eastern lines are elevated on arches all the way to Charing Cross. Because of this the entrance to the Bricklayer Arms complex from the South Eastern side was via a long slope down between two of the viaducts.

The branch line begins just at the rear of where the class 376 unit can be seen.

This is a bit further away from New Cross, as the two viaducts come together again.

A bit further still, the line crosses underneath the main line, by turning to the right.

Originally it was twin track but one line has been lifted.

The next view is from the Down London Bridge Slow Line and shows where the line went under the metal bridge of the previous picture.

Location of the Long Slope - sandwiched between the London Bridge lines and SECR lines

The next photo is from the same position as the previous one, but turned through 180 degrees. This is the site of the former Rotherhithe Carriage Sidings, which spread out to the right as far as Rotherhithe New Road (where the tall building is on the right of picture). The pair of lines from the Long Slope behind us ran straight ahead through where the big white square building is, to North Kent West junction. Beyond that was Willow Walk goods sidings and then the Bricklayers Arms' complex.

And finally this photo is taken from beside the the large white shed in the centre of the previous photo, looking back through Rotherhithe Road carriage sidings towards the Long Slope.
