Introduction
With all of the grandeur of UP’s Overland route, the highlight of it all might very well be the segment of track known as the Evanston Sub. Many a UP publicity photo has been taken along this sub, especially around the eastern Utah areas of Echo Canyon and the Wahsatch area. Double track lines and plenty of trains will greet your camera and you haven’t seen the west unless you’ve explored the vast plains of southern Wyoming. This sub has a lot to offer. Trains, scenery, mountains and plains, its all here on the Evanston Subdivision.
Westbound trains are in the midst of their grueling climb across the Rockies, and it is this portion of track that gave rise to the biggest steam and diesel locomotives that the Union Pacific is so famous for. The Big Boys and Challengers, Gas turbines and Centennials, all were created with one main focus, getting the freight across the Overland Route and fast!
Access along the line is sporadic at best. While many locations are easily explored, others will challenge even the best railfan's skill requiring a bit of ingenuity to successfully survey and cover.
