I was hoping
to meet someone coming over the hill as I made my way back over the east
side, and sure enough not 3-4 miles from Cima I met the I G2GS, led by
UP 4340. This would be the last train I'd catch in the morning hours. I
went all the way back down to Ivanpah and fiddled around along the way
hoping for more, but the scanner was quiet. I was running low on
gas and had some critical decisions to make. Sit in one spot for the better
part of the afternoon (not using gas) and then head home or go back into
Primm, NV for gas and hope I don't miss much.
Normally this decision
wouldn't be too hard, since the traffic is generally slow in the afternoon
and picks up in the evening, but today had proved to be out of the norm
so far. True, I had seen stack after stack, and knew that we don't have
too many more on the line, so risking the gas run might be worth it right
now. The 40 mile round trip was a concern too, but not enough of one and
I ultimately decided to get my gas and wait in Primm for the next westbound
to follow up the hill. The afternoon sun wasn't going to favor the eastbounds
anymore, so westbound trains were preferred anyway. I figured I'll wait
in Primm for a westbound. If I get one I'll follow it back over the hill.
So with a plan of attack and fuel becoming an issue I made for Primm Nascar
style. Darn tootin if here comes another stack wb, just when I was far
enough along that I was worried about the gas enough to keep me from heading
into Nipton to catch it. (Would have made a fine picture too!) :o(
I grumbled about that
all the way to Primm, as I watched the train head over the hill in my mirror.
I got to Primm and fueled up, ate at McFleas and parked where I could see
Jean, 15 miles away, and any approaching trains. It was just a short time
and my luck returned. I hadn't thought about the 4 manifest we usually
get, and one had just rounded the corner at Jean!
