Overview
The Yermo segment of the Cima Sub is possibly the least interesting if the 4 segments outlined. Mostly straight, fairly flat track is the norm here, with nothing of note to tell you about. Around Field it is a bit more interesting, but of course, access is limited. There is a road running parallel to the line from Yermo to Manix so getting trackside is very easy, it just isn't very appealing. But for the stalwart at heart, this part of the line tends to see quite a few staged trains, especially westbounds waiting to get into Yermo. Anyhow, with a little luck and a bit of imagination, maybe you'll be able to find something interesting to explore here. Let me know if you do.
Access: A paved, albeit rough, road exists along most of the tracks here. Yermo Rd it's called, and it comes right out of town and follows the tracks much of the way toward Afton Cyn. Also, I believe all the exits off of I-15 between Yermo and Afton Cyn (interstate MP 192 to MP 219) will get you trackside. So decent access is available throughout this segment of the line.
Lodging: Plenty of hotel rooms in Barstow, and as a bonus there are a few next to the BNSF Transcon, with its 70 trains a day.
