Union
Pacific was the first transcontinental railroad; founded in
1862 and completed with driving of the "Golden Spike" at the meeting
point with the Central Pacific Railroad near Promontory, UT,
on May 10, 1869.
The UP is currently one of the largest railroads in North America serving the western 2/3rds of the U.S. with over 32,000 miles of track. ![]() UP 1592 at Winona, MN, 6/24/20. ![]() UP 6922 on display in Cody Park at North Platte, NE, 8/04/06. One of 47 units built in the early 1970's exclusively for UP, it's essentially 2 GP40's on a single frame. |
