The
Great Northern Railway was the northernmost of the railroads connecting
Minnesota and the Pacific northwest. GN merged with NP, CB&Q, and SP&S
forming BN in 1970. Much of GN's heritage has been preserved or is still
in use today!

GN van/bus displayed at Havre, MT, 11/08/06. It ferried passengers
between Whitefish, MT, and Kalispell, MT.
GN 181 at Whitefish, MT, 8/29/01.
GN 400 "Hustle Muscle" at Osceola, WI, 5/23/15. 400 was the
1st production SD45 built in 1966. It is owned & maintained in operating
condition by the Minnesota Transportation Museum, in St Paul, MN.
GN 441 at Essex, MT, 8/27/09. This is a shell in GN's short
lived "Big Sky Blue" paint scheme of the late 1960's refitted for use as
a rental cabin at the Isaak Walton Inn at Essex.
