Black Mesa & Lake Powell (BLKM) was built in 1973 for the sole purpose
of transporting coal from the Peabody Coal Company's Black Mesa Mine near
Kayenta, AZ, to the Navajo Generating Station power plant at Page, AZ. Coal
is mined at the top of the mesa, takes an 8-10 mile conveyor belt trip to
the loading silo's, then 78 rail miles to Page. Their sole trainset usually
makes 3 round trips a day from the mine to Page and is electrified via the
50,000 volt overhead catenary. BLKM ceased operations in 2019 with
the closing of the Navajo Generation Station.
