UP "Challenger" 3985 was the world's largest operating steam locomotive
until 4014 returned to service. It was built by American Locomotive Company
(Alco) in July 1943 for the Union Pacific Railroad and 1 of 3 surviving locomotives
in UP's steam fleet. All locomotives are stored in UP's roundhouse at
Cheyenne, WY.
January 2023 Update: 3935 operated until 2010 when it was sidelined
with boiler issues and UP Steam's priority to return the Big Boy to operational
service. In 2022 UP donated 3985, along with other rolling equipment, to
Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvas, IL. In 2023 Railroad Heritage
began work to return 3985 to operational status.
