Issue #128, September - October 2010

The main feature this month is the beautiful scratchbuilt model of B&M Atlantic #3205 by Ken Robbins. This is the story of how he started out with a Tenshodo C&NW 4-4-2 and learned how to work with brass. There is a second article on the necessary modifications to the new Rapido American Flyer cars by Tom Thompson.

The long awaited Rapido American Flyer cars have arrived and if you haven’t got one by now you’ll be hard pressed to find one. The detail as expected surpasses anything else we have seen so far in B&M RTR models. There is a minor correction to be made; see page 4 concerning the Skirt. Also, of the 12 car numbers available one of the maroon cars is numbered #4584 which is not correct. Easiest solution would be to change the "8" to a "9"

I had asked Jason Shron if he would consider the B&M/MEC/NH stainless steel fleet? He responded: "We've looked into it and I don't think it would be profitable, unfortunately. There is nothing shared with our other cars except for the trucks and a couple of underbody bits, and while I think we can sell about 6000 cars in total, that is not enough to cover the cost of the tooling. I don't want to compromise and bring out a poorly detailed car, and highly-detailed cars cost a lot to tool."

The final series, the Con-Cor B&M (ex-PRR mBM62) Baggage Mail Cars should be at your dealers by the time you read this.

Micro-Trains has released an N scale version of the B&M 50' Evans box car in the McGinnis scheme with an aluminum roof, tall ladders, no roofwalk and sliding doors. Feature DF logo, Barber Roller Bearing trucks and Hydr-Cushion underframe. Order #077-00190, MSRP $25.25.

For those interested in Boston subway and elevated cars a company called Imagine That has produced some fantastic replicas of the Chicago Elevated system structures. Their display layout shown on the web at the recent NMRA convention is amazing. They plan to do the Boston El structures in several scales at some future point, presumably if the demand is there. See www.imaginethatlaserart.com.

I'm still trying to drum up enough interest in having the old 0600 series El cars cast in resin but at this point I need at least ten more commitments. Let me know if interested.
