AMTRAK STATEMENT REGARDING
LEGISLATIVE ACTION ON THE CONTINUED
OPERATION OF THE TEXAS EAGLE
Texas state officials have notified Amtrak of the initial approval by the Texas House of
Representatives of a measure which would enable the state to extend a $5.6 million loan to
Amtrak. The loan would allow Amtrak to continue the operation of the three-days-weekly
service along the St. Louis-San Antonio portion of the Texas Eagle route through Sept. 30,
1997. Final approval by the Texas State Senate is necessary before the bill can go to the
governor for his approval. Gov. George Bush's office has indicated he will support the
legislation.
The action by the Texas House of Representatives is a positive step toward retaining the
train. Texas Eagle service after its scheduled May 10 discontinuance date is dependent upon
final approval of legislation and a loan agreement by state officials.
