Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway Press Release 12/13/1978
Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway A
Locally Owned & Operated Railway Is Preserving Local Rail
Service.
The Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway began operating 45
miles of railroad from Vassar to Miffington, Vassar to Caro and Coiling,
and Vassar to Reese and Munger on Oct. 1, 1977. The T&SB Railway is the Thumb's
newest railway. The Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway is, in a very real sense,
a cooperative venture with all our shipper-owners, a locally owned
and controlled railroad.
One of the basic ideas about Federal and State assistance
to start short lines is that these lines have failed primarily because
of large amounts of public monies poured into road construction. For this reason, funds
are available to rehabilitate branch lines and help them to become more competitive
with motor carriers. The Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Railway has a contract
with the State to repair our tracks and provide other aid.
We are making ourselves of real value to our shippers in
several ways:
The T&SB Railway has fifty-four covered hoppers
for the use of our shippers.
The T&SB Railway has a full-time marketing manager
to work with shippers and connecting railroads to help establish
competitive rates, obtain equipment, and assist in transporting and marketing shipper's
products.
Our shippers route cars over two connecting railroads,
the Grand Trunk Western and Chessie. Shippers choose the route
that provides the best service. We connect our communities with railroads blanketing
the North American Continent.
Our firm has people aboard and available with transportation
logistical experience in several modes. We actively work with our
shippers to minimize their total transportation and inventory handling costs.
Our shippers have a small, flexible, responsive, local
railroad to work on their behalf in trans- portation cost inquiries,
routing and car location information, and for timely delivery of both normal
and time-critical shipments.
This locally owned and controlled railroad is here
to stay, to keep transportation competitive in the Thumb, to squeeze
the waste out of transportation, and to make a profit for the owners. We
also want to be a good neighbor to all our communities, and to
put our payroll and earnings back into this local area.
