ANN ARBOR R.

ANN ARBOR R. R. By F. D. Cairns 1938

The Ann Arbor does more passenger business one day every two years then it does all the rest of the time.  This one day is the day of the Ohio and Michigan football game at Ann Arbor, Mich.  It is to be November 22, 1939, next.  The Ann Arbor takes the passenger cars from other roads at Alexis and hauls them direct to the stadium in Ann Arbor.

On November 20, 1937 there were seven specials that left Toledo between 9 AM and 1 PM hauling cars of the C&O, NKP, Penna. and Wabash, pulled by consolidation and mikado type freight locomotives.  I Have a picture of one of these trains.

Interesting incidents on this day were- the last to leave Toledo was late to the game and arrived in Ann Arbor after the kick-off.  It was pulled by consolidation No. 2172 with 57" drivers, an engine ordinally used on local freight.  On the return trip on of the engines went dead before reaching Toledo and caused considerable delay.

The Ann Arbor runs one passenger train each way every day except Sunday, usually using Atlantic type engine Nos. 1611, 1612, and 1614.  Nos. 1610 and 1613 were wrecked sometime ago and never repaired.  Also used on this passenger are ten wheelers 120, 121, 131, 141, 151, and 152, built some 35 or 40 years ago.  Train consists of one combination mail-express car and one coach.  Once in a great while a Pullman is seen carrying prisoners to the Milan penitentiary.  Usually when the train is over three cars a Mike engine is used, or when no other one is available Mike No. 2201 or 2218 can be seen.

The freight power is quite modern and sometimes trains of 70 or more cars are run.  Mikes Nos. 2480 to 2483 and 2490 to 2494 handle through freight, with sometimes Santa Fe types 2552, 2553.  Local freight uses consolidations Nos. 2170 to 2181.  Two haeavy 8 wheel switchers are in operation in Toledo, 1551 and 1552.
