DIRECTORY LISTS OF THE MILLS, FACTORIES AND LUMBERMEN OF MICHIGAN.
With this issue the LUMBERMAN presents the great white pine manufacturing state of Michigan in a list which not embraces manufactures of white pine lumber and shingles, but also those who are engaged in the manufacture and handling of forest products of almost every description.
A count of the list will show 917 saw mills reported, of which 222 have shingle mills machinery as part of the plant. Beside these shingle mills there are 150 which have no connection with saw mills.
Of planing mills there are 450, of of which 223 are owned by saw mill concerns. One hundred planing mills are reported as reaching the dimensions of sash, door and blind factories.
One hundred and twenty stave and heading mills are represented in the list and 30 box factories. Over 225 report themselves as wholesalers, 55 as commission dealers and about 300 as retailers.
As far as reported there are 176 firms that use dry kilns, 63 that operate logging railways, 81 saw mills that are equipped with band mills and 206 general stores are conducted in connection with manufacturing business. Of the 917 saw mills only 53 are are portable.
Many other particulars are given in in the list which will be seen on examination. The name of many loggers and log dealers are given, but there was no attempt made to obtain even an approximately compete list of such. While the list in every line is not claimed to be complete, its deficiencies are due to the the apathy of those most interested. It is, however, by far the largest list of bona fide names and address of those interested in the lumber business of Michigan ever printed, and in the amount of detail it furnishes is simply unexampled in any line.
The following list was extracted from the the above article, to show only town or village were on or to be on the Ann Arbor railroad.
The code table follows the listing, each code item is separated by a semicolon
