 CHARACTISTICS OF COUNTRY

The line in Ohio and the lower peninsula of Michigan traverses a generally rolling country of varying productivity, with a sandy soil.  Extremes of temperature range from minus 20 degrees to 100 degrees above.  Annual precipitation is about 31 inches.

Toledo, Ohio, is an important manufacturing city.  The country along the westerly portion of the road was formerly covered with forests, largely white pine, and the principal industries there are still the production of lumber and allied products.  Grain, beans, and sugar beets are the principal farm products in the southern and central portions.

The line in the upper peninsula traverses a swampy country with occasional sandy ridges or knolls.  Extremes of temperature range from minus 35 degrees to 95 degres above.  Annual precipitation is about 31 inches.  Lumber and allied products are the principal industries.

ROAD

On the line in Ohio and the lower peninsula of Michigan maximum grades vary from 0.5 per cent to over 1.0 per cent.  There are some curves of 6 and 8 degrees, but the ordinary maximum is about 4 degrees.

Grading is moderate in volume, averaging about 22,000 cubic yards per mile of road.  The principal bridges are a steel trestle over the Huron River at Ann Arbor and ttruss spans of the Raisin, Shiawassee and Manistee Rivers.  Ties in the main track average about 3100 per mile, mostly cedar and white oak.  Rail in the the main track is 70, 75, and 80 pound.  Ballast is principally gravel, obtained from pits along the carrier's line.

Telegraph:  Certain wires are carried on the pole line of the Postal Telegraph-Cable Company; the Michigan State Telephone Company; and the Benzie Consolidated Telephone Company, in addition to those on the pole lines of the carrier.  Property as here in reported is in accordance with agreed ownship at time of field inventory.

The principal shops are at Owosso.

On the line in the upper peninsula the grading is very light.  The principal bridges are a truss bridge over the Manistique River, and a plate girder bridge over the Indian River.  Ties average about 2800 per mile and are softwoood.  Rail in main track is 80 pound.  Ballast is sand and gravel.  A small repair shop is located at Manistique.
