Built by Budd in 1950 for the Union Pacific Railroad as part of a total of 50 Pacific-Series sleeping cars delivered by Budd that year. The car was configured as a 10 Roomette 6 Double Bedroom Sleeper, named "Pacific Sands" and numbered 1437. The car operated on all of the UP "City" trains including the City of Portland, City Of Los Angeles, and the City of San Franciso. Conveyed to Amtrak in 1971, and numbered 2630. Converted to Head-End Power from Steam Heat in June 1979 and renumbered 2881. Amtrak took the car out of service and placed it up for sale in 1995. Sold into private ownership in 1996 after 46 years of service. The exterior of the car was restored to the Pullman/UP paint scheme by the car's first private owner. The car today is owned/operated by LA Rail and is equipped with 22 beds. Historical Information about this car provided by AAPRCO and amtrakbythenumbers.com. |
