Built by Budd in 1950 for the Union Pacific Railroad as a 10 Roomette, 6 Double Bedroom Sleeper, named "Pacific Island" and numbered 1423. It was used in Pullman First Class service on the railroad. Conveyed to Amtrak in 1971, the car was renumbered 2617. This was one of the first cars Amtrak converted to Head-End Power from Steam Heat, having done so in May 1977 when the car was renumbered 2917. The car operated on Amtrak until 1995 and was sold to current owner Dominion Rail Voyages in 1999. Under private ownership, the car undwerwent major upgrades including converstion to a 6 Double Bedroom Lounge configuration that was completed in 2002. It was renamed "Mount Vernon" in honor of George & Martha Washington's estate on the Potomac River. Historical Information about this car provided by AAPRCO and amtrakbythenumbers.com.
