Built by Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops with the help of Budd in 1988, this was the prototype Viewliner dining car. It operated until the mid-2000's before being stored. In 2011, it was re-activated using funding from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (Economic Stimulus). The car originally didn't have a name but once rebuilt, it was named "Indianapolis". This falls in line with the eventual naming of the 25 new Viewliner II diners which will also be named after state capitals east of the Mississippi. Those cars will be built by CAF USA in Elmira Heights, NY. Historical information about this car provided by www.amtrakbythenumbers.com. |
