Amtrak's GE P40DC Roster Photos

TERRITORY: These units originally were used nationwide however once Amtrak had exited the Mail & Express business that warranted the need for more power on it's trains (likely part of the reason it ordered 207 P42's), it found itself with excess power. Several of these units were eventually sold off and many remained in storage until 2010 when funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment act were used to refurbish 15 of these units and bring them back into service.


GENERAL: Amtrak's first Genesis Series unit built by General Electric Transportation Systems in Erie, Pennsylvania. These units first went into service in early 1993 on Long-Distance trains across Amtrak's System.
SPECS: Equipped with a 4000 horsepower prime mover and DC Traction Motors, these were the first locomotives of their kind for Amtrak. Several have been upgraded partially to P42DC Standards.

NOTES: Amtrak received 1 order of these units #800-843. They were originally delivered in the Phase III Paint Scheme that fades to gray as the stripes go to the back of the unit. They have been given several names in the railroad community including "AMD-103" meaing Amtrak Locomotive capable of 103mph, as well as being known as a Genesis Unit which is GE's designation for these units.
