Built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in September 1952 as an SW9 for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad and numbered 8955. Later renumbered by the P&LE to 1240. Acquired by Granite City Steel and retaining the number 1240. Amtrak acquired it from Granite City Steel and numbered it 798.
