Amtrak's EMD F40PH & F40PHR Roster Photos


GENERAL: Amtrak's primary road unit from the late 1970's through the late 1990's. Amtrak at one point rostered some 216 of these units and they were used systemwide on short as well as long-distance trains. With the exception of units that have been converted to "Non-Powered Cab Units" or "NPCU's" for use in Push-Pull Service on certain trains, none of these units remain in regular service today. The NPCU's were renumbered with 90 then the original unit number, example: F40PHR #251 is now NPCU #90251.
SPECS: Built by EMD, these units boasted a 3000 horsepower prime mover and were equipped with HEP (Head End Power) Generators and DC Traction Motors. The F40's were also the first such units that Amtrak owned that had HEP capability built in.
TERRITORY: These units operated all across the Amtrak System until their eventual replacement by General Electric "Genesis" (P40's & P42's) units during the mid to late 1990's.
NOTES: The first 30 units (200-229) were delivered with the "F40PH" designation. Units 230-409 were delivered by EMD with the designation "F40PHR" the "R" meaning "Rebuild" as they were built with parts from traded in SDP40F's that Amtrak had in the early 1970's. Units 410-415 were purchased by Amtrak from GO Transit of Toronto, Ontario and were the standard F40PH. Unit #231 has since been purchased by Chris Fussell from Amtrak and is now in Portland, Oregon undergoing restoration.
