GENERAL: The AEM-7 (ASEA Electro Locomotive 7000 Horsepower) was built as a replacement for the aging GG-1. It's electrical components, overall design and trucks came from Sweden with its body shell design by Budd. EMD assembled these units at their LaGrange, IL facility with Amtrak taking delivery between 1980 and 1988. |

SPECS: Each unit is designed to produce 7000 Horsepower. All were designed to operate on both the original PRR 12,000 volt/25 cycle electrical standard as well as the current 25,000 volt AC Standard used today on the NEC. These units are designed with cabs on both ends for ease in switching from one end of the train to another allowing no need for a wye track. Several units have been rebuilt with AC equipment, see NOTES below... |
|||||
TERRITORY: All AEM-7's were run and maintained on the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington. | |||||
NOTES: Many
AEM-7s have been upgraded to AEM-7AC's. Included in the upgrades were new
AC propulsion equipment, as well as an updated cab with computer screens.
The new Phase V paint scheme was also added. The
upgrade project
was a joint operation with Amtrak and Alstom. Check out Jim
Hebner's Amtrak Photo Archive for more info on the AEM-7's. 2018 Update: All AEM-7's have since been retired by Amtrak and also a separate page for the ACS-64's is now online and can be seen by clicking HERE. |
