Built by Budd in 1947 for the New York Central Railroad as one of 13 Tavern Lounge cars for use on the NYC's long-distance trains. Under Penn Central ownership, the car was renumbered 4443 and served on many trains between New York and Washington. Conveyed to Conrail in 1976, the car was assigned to the North Jersey Coast Line service operated by Conrail and later New Jersey Transit. Retired in 1987, the car was donated by NJ Transit to the United Railroad Historical Society in 1991. Having suffered extreme vandalism while in storage, the car has been fully restored to its original as-built configuration and has been an Amtrak-certified car since January 2010. Historical information about this car provided by The United Railroad Historical Society. |
