Built in September 1944 for the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad (Nickel Plate Road) by the Lima Locomotive Works, #765 was one of 80 locomotives of this type built for the Nicke Plate, having operated in both freight and passenger service between Chicago, IL, Fort Wayne, IN and Bellevue, OH until June 1958. It's last service was the following winter, helping a stranded passenger train in Fort Wayne, which made it the last NKP Berkshire working on the railroad.
#765 was so well-liked by crews and so dependable, the railroad stored it indoors until the early 1960's and was donated by the railroad to the City of Fort Wayne. For ceremonial purposes, she was renumbered 767 and placed on display at Lawton Park in Fort Wayne. The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society was formed to preserve and restore the locomotive which by 1972 had begun deteriorating. It was removed from the park in 1974 and by 1979 was operating again. It has been operating in excursion service ever since. In 2001, #765 underwent another rebuild costing $800,000 which was completed in 2005. Historical information about this locomotive provided by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.
