Built and owned by Pullman in 1923 and assinged to the Pennsylvania Railroad under a lease agreement as a Combine Baggage-Library Car and named "Maple Shade". The 81ft car weighed 80 tons and had a 4 section, 12 seat lounge, Barbor Shop, and a 28ft baggage area. It operated on famous Pennsylvania trains including the "Broadway Limited" and the "Spirit Of St. Louis" for 11 years. In 1934, the car was rebuilt into a 6 double bedroom-buffet-lounge and renamed "Dover Harbor" equipped with air conditioning which was new at the time, and was assigned to the New York Central System. Like other Pullman cars, this car was not assigned a number as Pullman cars were tracked by their names instead. The car now weighed 87 tons and was repainted into its Pullman green and gold colors it wears today. Pullman would own the car until 1948 when it transferred ownership of this car to the New York Central for a brief period after the Interstate Commerce Commission imposed a breakup of the monopoly the Pullman Company where it had to divest portions of its business.
In 1953, the car was repainted into New York Central gray livery and was assigned to operate on the "Montrealer" and the "Washingtonian" between Washington, DC and Montreal, Quebec Canada. Repainted into two-town gray Pullman paint and ownership transferred back to Pullman, the car was retired in 1965 and sold to a private owner in 1967. After ownership by a series of private owners, the car was purchased by the Washington, DC Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society and has been totally renovated by the chapter and bacame Amtrak-certified in 1986. Today, the car carries an Amtrak private car #800073 as well as NRHX #001. Historical information about this car provided by AAPRCO, and doverharbor.com.
