Welcome
to Across the West - Southwest - Designed to
showcase the beautiful scenery of New Mexico, Arizona and west Texas and
the trains passing through there every day. BNSF and Union Pacific are
the big guys, but there are also numerous shortlines and, of course, Amtrak.
In general the area I run around in is shown in the map I developed below
(DeLorme Topo 4.0). The major BNSF lines are highlited in red, and the
major Union Pacific lines are highlited in green.

Besides
trains of course, there's also history, much of it
within short side trips of the rails, much of it within the field of view
of the train pictures. This is, after all, the country of the Apache,
Navajo and Comanche, the Pueblos, Pony Soldiers and Billy the Kid, and
the Spanish Conquistadores and US Route 66. Albuquerque is 300 years old
this year (2005) and it isn't even the oldest city in the state. The Conquistadores
first came here in 1540 and Santa Fe was founded as the capital city in
1607(1610?). Fear not, however, I'm a railfan not a historian or anthropologist
so these forays into history will be mostly graphic and mostly brief.
