Old and New Union Station Worcester,Ma. Of recent era the station was rebuilt-restored with a large influx of money.

The tower on the left is from the first Union Station, built in 1875. For 84 years it was the tallest structure in Worcester but was torn down in 1959 to make way for I-290.

The "newer" Union Station to the right of the 1875 tower was built between 1909 and 1911 and served Worcester until its closing in 1972. The "Million-dollar station" as it was called, was the second largest ralroad station in New England after the old South Station in Boston.

Most of the old station was torn down after the second was finished with the exception of the tower.

Weakened by train vibration, the two original towers of the present station were removed in 1926, 17 years after the station was built. They were replaced by twin gables. The scalloped canopy over the front entrance was removed in 1941 and added again with the recent renovations which also replaced the twin towers.
