It was just about this time two years ago, I and the Binghamton railfan community lost a good friend when Tom Trencansky tragically passed away at the early
age of 61. In memory of Tom, I'll
post a link to the website he started and maintained, along with a wonderful painting of the Sharks going through the "S"
curve just east of Waverly NY on the LV branch from Owego to Sayre where it passed under NY-17 going into the old Southern Central yard in Sayre. Tom and
I both photographed the same scene back in the day. It's a happy memory of the many trips Tom and I made to Sayre to photograph the Lehigh Valley RR.
Tom was fond of "critters", 44-tonners but most of all, Baldwin diesels. The LV 200 lone Baldwin road switcher managed to elude my camera, and Tom and I
tried several times to see it operating, he had in the past but the best I did was ONCE in the dead line. The D&H Sharks tour on the D&H/LV interchange run
known as "Sayre Job", symboled during the pre-Conrail days as OF1/BNW3 returning as FO4, with the LV side known as FO2/NWB4, OF3 returning were two
our favorite trains to chase. Once, with another Binghamton railfan John Baumgardt, Tom and I journeyed to Owego in John's old beater car where we
pulled in waiting for D&H RS3's to cross over from the EL to the LV, and the gas tank on John's car fell out! We flagged down the D&H conductor and he
graciously allowed us to ride the caboose to Sayre and back to Binghamton. My one and only ride on the Sayre job!
