Minutes of the 2007 Membership Meetings

December 18, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by Secretary Bill Holdsworth at 9:05 p.m., after the holiday social downstairs. Frances Mohr reminded everyone about the chapter banquet scheduled for March 29 at the Amphora Diner in Herndon. No other business was conducted. Alex Mayes presented a slide show featuring images from Montana, Idaho, and Oregon.


November 20, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:19 p.m. Attendance was 39.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the October meeting.

Jay Creswell was absent, but submitted a written report. Chapter members donated $840 towards towards the completion of the Silver Spring station documentary. The chapter matched the donation bringing the total funds raised for the project to $1,680.

John Sery reported that the Silver Spring station documentary is now scheduled to air during WETA's March fundraising drive. He said chapter members will be invited to a theatre showing in advance of the broadcast.

Bennett Lichtman reported that the nomination committee had assembled the slate of norminees for officers and directors for the coming year, which was:

There were no nominations from the floor. Members passed a motion to accept the slate by acclamation.

Members approved a motion authorizing an expenditure of $70 to rent a meeting room, contingent on availability, for the program following the holiday social in December.

Rick Davidson reported on the national directors' meeting. The national organization is moving out of its headquarters building in Philadelphia. Rick said that the renewal process is going much better this year.

Bill Hopkins announced that the banquet is scheduled for March 29 at the Amphora in Herndon.

October 16, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

Meeting Convened 8:10 p.m.

President Gordy Bjoraker presided.
Vice President Marc Laborde and Secretary Bill Holdsworth were absent.
Total attendance: 37

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer's report, a copy of which is attached.
In addition he announced that $305 had been collected toward the matching grant for the Silver Spring Station video and that contributions had to be received tonight because of the short deadline to complete the video for a December showing.

John Morris gave an interim Nominating Committee report. President Bjoraker, Secretary Holdsworth, and Treasurer Creswell have agreed to run again. He is yet to reach Vice President Laborde to determine if he will run again. National Director Hott will not run for that office again and Director Davidson will run for it. Hott will run for one of the Director seats. The directors with expiring terms will seek reelection.

There being no other business, the meeting concluded with announcement about rail news. Last week's runaway VRE locomotive generated the liveliest discussion.

The business meeting adjourned at 8:30, and was followed by a program featuring rail films from the late 1940's, early 1950's.

September 18, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order at 8:11 p.m. Secretary Bill Holdsworth presided in the absence of the president and vice president. Attendance was 38.

Bill Holdsworth recognized Alex Mayes for his status as an honorary life membership of the chapter.  

Jay Creswell gave the treasurer's report summarizing August expenses. He made copies of the July report available to those who were interested.

Rick Davidson reported on the national directors' meeting. The directors approved a dues increased. A new company will be handling the mailing for membership renewal.

Members approved a motion authorizing the board of directors to donate from Chapter funds an amount not to exceed $1500 toward the complete of the Silver Spring Station video. The Chapter shall match dollar for dollar any member contributions up to the maximum of $1500.

Other Notes from the Meeting

Members saw a preview of the the Silver Spring Station video, which is scheduled to air on WETA in December.

After the intermission, members enjoyed Paul Woodring's slide program featuring some of the uniquely Ohio operations in the 1970s and 1980s.


August 21, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:12 p.m. Attendance was 21.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the July meeting.

Members approved a motion granting an honorary life membership to Alex Mayes in recognition of his service to the chapter.

After the intermission, members enjoyed a film about American chapel cars, passenger cars that were converted or built new to serve the rural communities without churches or clergy.


July 17, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Marc Laborde at 8:10 p.m. Attendance was 43.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer's report, summarizing June expenses.

Members approved a motion authorizing Rick Davidson to represent the chapter at the national board of directors meeting in Chattanooga. National director Jerry Hott will be unable to attend the meeting.

After the intermission, Ken Lehman gave a slide program on railroads of the southwest, featuring slides from two trips to Utah, New Mexico and Arizona in 1995 and 1996.


June 19, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:12 p.m. Attendance was 31.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the May meeting.

Gordy announced that he plans to participate in a conference call with the national organization concerning the proposed $11 dues increase.

Members observed a moment of silence in memory of Bill Duvall. Bill was a charter member of the chapter and a great photographer.

After the intermission, author Rush Loving discussed his book, The Men Who Loved Trains, concerning the history of Conrail.


May 15, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:10 p.m. Attendance was 35.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the April meeting.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer’s report, summarizing April activity.

Jerry Hott reported on the national board of directors meeting. The national organization is proposing an $11 increase in the annual dues. The organization made a profit on the 2006 Ohio convention. The 2008 national convention will be held in Fort Worth, TX.

April 17, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:10 p.m. Attendance was 41.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the March meeting.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer’s report, summarizing March activity.

Gordy presented Rudy Volin with a pin commemorating his 60 years of NRHS membership. Rick Davidson reported on the other members who received pins this year: Bob Truax, 70 years; Tom Underwood, 50 years; and Brian Gilleran, 25 years.

Members approved a motion authorizing an amount not to exceed $1,250 to send one person, to be designated by the board of directors, to Railcamp.

After the intermission members voted for the grand prize in the annual slide contest.

Stephen Sery presented a slide and video program concerning his experiece at the 2006 Railcamp in Nevada.

Rudy Volin gave a slide program, featuring Southern and N&W trains.


March 20, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:10 p.m. Attendance was 34.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the February meeting. Bill alerted members to a problem with the web site, which he hoped to correct soon.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer’s report, summarizing February activity.

Members were reminded about the upcoming banquet.

Paul Woodring alerted members to video on the internet, featuring one of his trains in a near-miss with a car at the Riverdale, MD grade crossing.

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:16 p.m. Attendance was 36.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the Janurary meeting.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer’s report, summarizing January activity.

Alex Mayes reminded members about the March slide contest and urged them to submit their entries.

John Morris reminded members about the St. Patrick's Day excursion to Ashland, VA, sponsored by the Chesapeake Railway Association.

After the intermission Bob Parks presented a slide program on the Southern Railway in the Seventies.


January 16, 2007

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Marc Laborde at 8:09 p.m. Attendance was 41.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer’s report, summarizing the 2006 activity. Jay reported that the chapter made donations to the B&O Historical Society and the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation of Buffalo at year end.

Jerry Hott reported that the national organization has mailed pre-registration forms for the 2007 convention in Chattanooga, TN.

John Morris alerted members to a St. Patrick's Day excursion to Ashland, VA, sponsored by the Chesapeake Railway Association.
