Minutes of the 2004 Membership Meetings

Potomac Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, Inc.

December 21, 2004

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker after the holiday social.

Gordy presented 25-year pins to Alex Mayes and Gordon Piscacek.

By acclaimation, the membership elected the slate of Gordy Bjoraker for president, Marc Laborde for vice president, Jay Creswell for treasurer, Bill Holdsworth for secretary, and Jerry Hott for national director.

Bill Holdsworth announced that the ballots had been mailed for the two contested positions on the board of directors. The nominating committee will receive and count the ballots.

Other Notes From The Meeting

Bob Cohen reported that authors who are writing a book on Potomac Yards are looking for historic photos.

After the meeting, Bob Cohen presented a selection of vintage commercially produced Super 8 movies featuring a variety of steam and diesel action.


November 16, 2004

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order at 8:09 p.m. by President Gordy Bjoraker. Attendance was 37.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer's report.

Rick Davidson reported that the national organization had encoutered delays in sending out the membership renewal notices, but he expected to receive them soon.

John Morris gave the report from the nominating committee. All incumbent officers agreed to seek reelection. In addition, Carl Franz submitted his name for consideration as a member of the Board of Directors. The election will be held at the December membership meeting.

France Mohr reported on her efforts to find a site for the chapter banquet.

Jerry Hott gave the news from the most recent the national board of directors meeting. The national organization will sponsor the 2006 convention at New Philadelphia, OH, near the Ohio Central Railroad

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

Other Notes From The Meeting

Alex Mayes presented a slide program on his Alaskan trip in 2003. The program featured riding and chasing the passenger trains which run between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Seward, and Whittier, plus scenes of freight railroading.


October 20, 2004

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order at 8:16 p.m. by President Gordy Bjoraker. Attendance was 27, on a rainy night.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer's report.

Rick Davidson announced that he expects to receive membership renewal notices at the end of the month.

Gordy announced that Bennett Lichtman will chair the nominating committee.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

Rumors are circulating that the Ohio Central Railroad will be the site of the 2006 national convention.

Gordy Bjoraker presented a slide program on railroading in Mexico during the 1970s and 1980s.


September 21, 2004

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order at 8:04 p.m. by President Gordy Bjoraker. Attendance was 42.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the previous meeting and reminded members about the recent chapter picnic.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer's report.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

Rick Davidson alerted members to possible changes in the renewal process, including a new format for the membership card.

Paul Bergdolt reported that one of the donations to the fund raising effort for Chesapeake Railway Association had been misplaced, but has now been recognized.

Walt Minnick presented a slide program featuring the Pennsylvania railroad in the 1950s.


August 17, 2004

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order at 8:08 p.m. by Vice President Marc Laborde. Attendance was 39.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer's report and reminded members about the chapter picnic at Gaithersburg City Hall Park September 11.

Jay presented Paul Berdolt of the Chesapeake Railway Association with a check for $2,460 to refurbish the seats on the former Long Island Rail Road coach owned by the association. The check represented the proceeds from the chapter's fund raising program, which matched member donations.

John Morris announced that he is organizing an impromptu excursion to Perryville August 27. The group will ride the 12:30 MARC train from Union Station. Participants should buy their tickets in advance or plan on redeeming their VIP passes obtained via the coupon in the Verizon phone book.

Bob Parks presented a slide program featuring photos from the Ma & Pa Railroad in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as shots from a journey on the Algoma Central in the 1990s.


July 20, 2004

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order at 8:02 p.m. by President Gordy Bjoraker. Attendance was 34.

Bob Cohen reminded members about the chapter picnic at Gaithersburg City Hall Park September 11.

Clay Moritz reported on the national board of directors meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

Members discussed New Jersey Transit's restrictions on rail photographers.

Bill Hopkins gave a slide program on the Monongahela Railway, covering the railway from the 1970s to its purchase by Conrail in the early 1990s.


June 15, 2004

The meeting was called to order shortly after 8 p.m. by President Gordy Bjoraker. Attendance was 37.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Gordy reminded members about the matching donation program to refurbish the seats on the former Long Island Rail Road coach owned by the Chesapeake Railway Association.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:33 p.m.

Bill reported that the winners of the slide contest would soon be on the chapter web site.

Pete Grosso gave a slide program on Magnolia Cutoff in the CSX Era, highlighting the scenic line criss-crossing the Potomac River near Paw Paw, WV.

Gordy announced that no July newsletter will be published. A postcard will be mailed reminding members of the July meeting.

Wayne Sherwin and Gordy discussed the contest to develop a logo for the chapter.
