Manassas is served by Norfolk Southern, Amtrak, and the Virginia Railway Express (VRE). It is also the location of a key junction on the NS Piedmont Division mainline between Atlanta, GA, and Alexandria, VA. From the Manassas Junction, the "B Line" branch, now operated as an unsignaled (dark) main line, heads west to Riverton Junction at Front Royal, Va., and a connection with the NS Virginia Division. Most freight trains through Manassas to/from the south use the branch line to reach Harrisburg, PA. via Hagerstown, MD. Amtrak and VRE passenger trains reach the Washington DC Union Station via Alexandria, VA.

of 100 series trains have the first numeric symbol replaced by the letter
M (i.e. 11R becomes M1R), 200 series trains use the letter I, 300 series
trains use the letter W, 400 series trains use the letter X, 800 series
trains use the letter S. Trains marked with the symbol (*) run as
needed.
