Silver Rails Rail Fest Day 1 7/17/2011

by Chris Guenzler

My day started with breakfast in the Pullman Suite of the Depot Inn and Suites as I worked on the Columbia Star Dinner Train story, after which I filled the van with petrol before driving to the Amtrak station where I visited with Bob Cox until the Southwest Chief was nearing La Plata before setting up for a picture.

The Southwest Chief arrived, after which I returned to the hotel and finished the story before taking everything that I had bought at CR Market yesterday and driving over to the Chris Guenzler Million Mile Lookout Point to start the barbecue so it would be ready when our guests arrived.

BNSF 6267 East was the first train after I arrived. I had brought my computer with me to write the Moberly parts of that story while at the barbecue.

BNSF 7591 West came by my photo location next.

That was followed by Union Pacific 4067 East.

BNSF 4545 West with a surprise of Oakway SD60 9009 in its consist.

BNSF 7807 East.

BNSF 7808 East.

UP 7465 West. Gene, his brother Bill, Nathan, Jim Choiniere and his daughter Dannah all enjoyed the hot dogs.

BNSF 5204 East.

BNSF 734 East. After that we cleaned up, took the perishables back to the Depot Inn & Suites then drove over to the Silver Rails Gallery so everyone could have a good tour. We then went west out of town and with a green signal lined up for an eastbound, I took us out to Indiana Place to set up for pictures.

BNSF 7301 East with Canadian National 2604 as its trailing unit went through the Indiana Place crossing. From here we drove out to Ethel.

Union Pacific 4661 East at Ethel.

BNSF 7874 West. We moved over two crossings east and waited. A BNSF Hi-Rail truck came down the north track, stopped and could not believe we were out photographing trains in this hot and humid weather. I asked him if any trains were coming and he responded that a westbound was at Revere and an eastbound was almost to Marceline. We packed up and headed straight to the old wooden bridge near Gibbs for our final set of pictures of this day.

BNSF 5089 East with Norfolk Southern 8798 as the trailing unit.

BNSF 7417 West. We returned to the Depot Inn & Suites where we all showered and changed clothes before going to the Red Rooster for dinner where I had the smoked hamburger. After that I drove to the Amtrak station and waited for Dennis Warwick to arrive on a ten-minute late Southwest Chief then finished and wrote today's story before calling it a night.
