First Metrolink Train To Use Track 1A at Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station 4/4/2011

by Chris Guenzler

On my morning trip to Solana Beach, I saw Metrolink 687 in the new Track 1A at the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink station and thought if that train was using it, then all the other ones that turn there now would as well. I had an idea and decided to pursue it this afternoon, which was to ride Pacific Surfliner 578 south to there then photograph the new platform and my train arriving there to take me home.

So I drove to the Santa Ana station, parked in the parking structure and walked out to the platform to wait for Pacific Surfliner 578 to pick me up for my two-stop trip to the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink station. Once there, I bought a Metrolink ticket to get me home and walked down and over to Platform 1 and 1A, where I found a sign.

After reading this sign, I started my walk down the length of Platform 1A.

There is a validator on this side but no ticketing machine anywhere on the east side of the tracks.

The end-of-track bumper and a red sign.

The Track 1/Track 1A signs.

These canopies have benches.

Here is the Track 1 handicap ramp.

The mainline view towards CP Cowen.

The Spot Cab sign for Track 1.

These canopies have no benches to sit and wait for your train.

The ATS {Automatic Train Stop} shoe on Track 1.

The Track 1A Handicap Ramp.

The CTC signal to get onto the mainline.

Looking at the original station platform for Track 2. I did some Sudoku puzzles until my train's arrival time was near.

Metrolink 684 arrived on Track 1A this afternoon then turned into Metrolink 804 bound for San Bernardino.

The whole train does not fit on the platform.

Metrolink 684's passengers leave for their cars and buses and after walking the outside the train, I boarded the rear car back to Santa Ana. The three- stop trip was quick and soon I was back at the Santa Ana station. I came home before returning here tonight for the monthly Orange County Railway Historical Society meeting at the depot.
