A Trip to Escondido to find a Santa Fe station 8/7/2011

by Chris Guenzler

After I hosted Let' Talk Trains on Saturday August 6th, 2011 I went to Santa Ana where I bought a Metrolink Weekend Pass before riding Pacific Surfliner 774 down to Irvine. Then about fifteen minutes later, I boarded Metrolink 657 to Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs and detrained and crossed the pedestrian bridge to the southbound side. An eastbound BNSF freight came through on the track in front of me which was followed by my Metrolink 656 which I took home to Santa Ana.

8/7/2011 This morning, I boarded Pacific Surfliner 564 in Pacific Business Class bound for Oceanside.

Pacific Sun Railroad GP38 3513, ex. Palouse County Railroad 799, exx. Blue Mountain Railroad 799, exxx. Union Pacific 799, nee Western Pacific 3022 built by Electro-Motive Division in 1965 was out in Stuart Mesa Yard.

We arrived in Oceanside early and I bought my Sprinter Day Pass then walked out to the Sprinter platform.

Pacific Surfliner 564 headed south to San Diego on this sunny morning. A few minutes later here came my Sprinter.

Sprinter 4011 arrived and I boarded for the trip to Escondido. 55 minutes later we pulled into the Escondido station and I detrained.

The Sprinter brought me to Escondido and now I would walk six blocks east to Grape Day Park where I found the reason for my visit this summer morning.

Also on display here is Santa Fe Railway Post Office car 112 nee Santa Fe 92, built by Pullman circa 1920.

One more view of the station and the Santa Fe RPO/coach. I returned to the Sprinter station and took the next Sprinter back to Oceanside. After lunch at Burger King, I went to Platform 2 to wait for my Metrolink train back to Santa Ana and saw the Metrolink Del Mar Race train before Metrolink 657 arrived to take me home. It had been a great adventure to Escondido this morning and I call this trip a success.
